Chapter 9
Kent paced the lobby, checking the time every few seconds. It had been over an hour since heâd left Jordanâs office and he was beginning to wonder if the man was blowing him off, despite his promise.
âHe hadnât better. Heâs working for me,â he said angrily under his breath. He was aware that wasnât the only reason heâd be upset if it happened. Heâd come to rely on Jordan to keep him from going off the deep end with fear for Kelly. Despite Jordanâs harsh demeanor most of the time, he was able to calm Kent with his mere presence. Well, now that I know him, that is. At first being around him did anything but. He knew when that had changedâat the restaurant, the second time theyâd met. Jordan had been less abrasive and, if not exactly friendly, at least heâd been able to carry on a casual conversation without Kentâs feeling he was still the subject of Jordanâs distrust. He was almost nice. I think thatâs when I started to want to get to know him better as a friend. Not that I got any vibes that he felt the same. First he saw me as a problem. Now heâs doing his best to find Kelly for her sake, before something horrible happens to her. That brought up a question he had to ask Jordan as soon as he showed up, if he did.
He heard a car horn and hurried to the lobby entrance, relieved when he saw Jordan lean over to open the passenger-side door of his car.
âSorry Iâm late. My job took a bit longer than expected and I had something I needed to do at the office, afterward.â
âThatâs okay. Youâre here, now, and I have a question. How long was it from when that woman was kidnapped and her body turned up in the lake?â
Jordan scowled and Kent thought he wouldnât answer, but he did. âNine days.â
âSo thereâs still time.â
Jordan nodded as they took off. âIf it is the same man and he sticks to the same schedule. We have no proof Tom was Nancyâs killer, other than the similarities of the two notes and the fact thereâs a slight resemblance between her and Kelly.â He smiled grimly. âAnd my gut feelings.â
âYou were a cop, and a good one I think, so that should count for a lot, at least in my estimation.â
âThanks.â
They stopped talking at that point as Jordan drove west on Sixth Avenue, finally turning left onto Federal, and several blocks later turning right into a residential area with small one and two story houses.
As they went down the street listed on Tomâs driverâs license, Kent pointed to a house in one block which matched the address. âThat canât be it. Thereâs kidsâ toys on the front porch and I can see part of a swing set in the back yard.â
âI tend to agree, but I want to watch the house from a safe spot to see who goes in and out.â
âWhereâs
